Web Designers: Share Your Favorite Shopping Cart Software
April 30th, 2006
I have been working with eCommerce solutions for the past several years. In that time, I haven’t begun to scratch the surface of all the eCommerce shopping cart software solutions available. Please plug your favorite shopping cart software and provide a working link to each suggestion’s Web site along with reasons that you favor working with your recommended solution.
I prefer to hear from designers about shopping cart solutions because I want recommendations that are flexible enough to handle design requirements while being praiseworthy as software applications. Of course, others are also welcome to post suggested shopping carts.

I am very happy with http://www.lightboxphoto.com/ which I use for my informational graphic shop http://www.grafikdienst.com. But one feature I miss: A fix price subscription for a month or for a year.

I’m wading through the intricacies of designing with Drupal and like the Drupal ecommerce module quite well. It combines a quite search engine friendly structure with some powerful order management tools, USPS and UPS integration, plus support for the major payment gateways.
Zen Cart is also pretty good as is osCommerce. However, both of these are overkill for the number of products most of my clients carry.

I just spent a few days working on a Zen Cart installation that involved the creation of a new template skinned with CSS, the installation of some modules and payment gateway stuff. I’ve got to say, that this software is much improved from the last time I looked seriously at it.
It also appears that between the use of Ultimate SEO URLs for Zen Cart module and the module hacks listed here, you can have a fully functional version of Zen Cart with search engine friendly URLs.
Of course, any time we hack the core of a software distribution, upgrading becomes more of a challenge. The Ultimate SEO URLs module has a limited number of hacks to the distribution files of Zen Cart. The number of hacks here are relatively small, but I would only recommend these for someone who is absolutely serious about making money via search engine traffic and has a budget for maintenance and bug squashing during upgrades.
Smaller e-commerce providers with very limited budgets can try this, and I’d be happy to help, but it *may* be more difficult to upgrade Zen Cart when a new release is available.
I’d like to see clean URLs bundled as a module with Zen Cart to mitigate any upgrade issues. We’ll see if this becomes available soon.

EncapsGallery software is easily customizable and configurable, I would suggest my friends to use it
